Obituary for Clyde R. Travis

Clyde R. Travis, age 84, of Washington, PA, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 15, 2016 while under the care of Presbyterian Senior Care in Washington.

He was born June 17, 1931 in East Finley Twp. His parents were Margaret Adeline Travis Dillie & Raymond Hartzell, and step father Gaylord Dillie.

He was a member of the Windy Gap Church since 1952.

Mr. Travis attended the former Claysville High School.

He joined the Navy in 1952 and served for 23 years retiring in 1975, then worked in the Washington Hospital from 1976 retiring from there in 1995. While in the Navy he served during the Bay of Pigs, Korea, and Vietnam. He was also stationed on the recovery ship that picked up the astronauts, Shepard, Conrad, and Cooper, from Gemini V.

Mr. Travis was a member of the American Legion since 1978. He was a member of the West Finley Volunteer Fire Dept. He was also a member of the West Finley Friendship Club.

On June 30, 1952 he married his high school sweetheart, Betty Travis, who passed away April 8, 2015. They had been married 62 years.

Surviving are four children, Sandra and husband Fuji Matsumoto of Zushi, Japan, Mona Gagnelius of Washington, PA, Bertie and husband Rick Franklin of Providence, KY, and Gary and wife Mindy Travis of West Finley; Seven grandchildren, Erica Matsumoto, Steven and Chris Chavez, Amy Franklin, Amber Talapas, and Chelsea & Paisley Travis, also nine great grandchildren, and brother Jackie Dillie.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a grandson, baby boy Matsumoto, brothers, Sonny Dillie and Chuck Hartzell, and son-in-law Greg Gagnelius.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. on Wednesday, April, 20, 2016 at the Kesterson-Rush Funeral Home, LLC., Rogersville, PA where a Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 P.M. Thursday, April 21, 2016 with Pastor George Crawford, officiating. Interment will follow at West Finley Cemetery.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, www.aspca.org. or any military organization to assist vets.
