Vera M. (Dutch) Sprowls, 85, of Claysville, Pa. died at 2:50 a.m. Tuesday, January 17, 2012 in The Washington Hospital emergency room after being in failing health for the past three months.She was born March 8, 1926 in Wheeling, W.Va. a daughter of the late Daniel Russell and Margaret Elizabeth Williams Thornburg and had resided in the Claysville area since 1946.Mrs. Sprowls had been a member of the Claysville United Methodist Church for over 50 years and was an active member of the Claysville United Methodist Women.She was also a member of the Claysville Senior Citizens and a former member of the Claysville American Legion Auxiliary and the Washington Hospital Auxiliary.Mrs. Sprowls was a 1944 graduate of the former Triadelphia (W.Va.) High School.She enjoyed traveling as long as her health permitted, and her time with family and grandchildren.Mrs. Sprowls was last employed as an admissions clerk by The Washington Hospital for 15 years prior to retiring in 1989.On July 31, 1946 she married Vaughn Dare "Flim" Sprowls who died April 15, 1994.Surviving are three daughters, Vicki, wife of Cecil Clark of Claysville, Patti, wife of Gary Gildow of Willow Springs, N. Carolina and Sheryl, wife of Gary Janovich of Washington; a son, Russell Sprowls of Claysville; a brother, Martin, husband of Ivona Thornburg of Casselberry, FL.; seven granddaughters, Tamara Lindley, Tabatha Cumer, Trudy Blough, Jennifer Wise, Carrie Vinski, Erica Gilmore and Jessica Nordberg, 13 great grandchildren.Deceased in addition to her parents and husband are two brothers, Daniel R. Thornburg, Jr. and Harry Thornburg.The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Claysville United Methodist Church.
