Samuel Harvey

Samuel H. Harvey, 99, formerly of Graysville, Pa. died at 10:20 p.m. Sunday, July 6, 2014 in the Respi Center West, in Waynesburg, Pa. He was born May 13, 1915 in Center Twp., Greene County, Pa. a son of the late Samuel Hawkins and Irene Dunn Carter Harvey. Mr. Harvey had resided in Carlisle, Carmichaels and Waynesburg, and was educated in a one room (Harvey) school in Center Twp. He attended the Hickorytown United Methodist Church while a resident of the Carlisle area, where he served as superintendent, Sunday school teacher, trustee and also served as chairman of the building committee of the church, and at his death he was a member of the Rogersville United Methodist Church. Mr. Harvey was also a member and past Master of the Harvey-Aleppo Grange 1444 at Graysville, the Graysville Lodge of the Knights of Pythias, the West Greene Senior Citizens and a charter member of the West Greene Area Lions Club. He had resided in Carlisle from 1957 until returning to Greene County in 1986 when he purchased the family property in Center Twp. and raised registered Suffolk sheep until 1999. Mr. Harvey was employed by Texas Eastern Gas Company for 31 years, in Greene County and Uniontown, prior to retiring in 1980 from the Carlisle station as Maintenance Foreman, a position he held from 1957 until 1978. On December 12, 1934 he married Laura Ella Johnson who died December 19, 1999, and on June 3, 2000 he married a childhood friend, Dorothy Goodwin Forshey who died December 16, 2006. Surviving are two sons, Samuel J., husband of Kitty Harvey of Crown Point, Ind. and Robert D. Harvey of Boiling Springs, Pa.; three grandchildren, David S. Harvey, Bree Hovetter and Gavin Mitchell Harvey; six great grandchildren, Alyssa Michelle, Emily Rose, Kyle David, Mikala Rose and Tiffany Paige Harvey and Emersen Payce Hovetter; a sister, Jeannette Iams Perky of Muncie, Ind.; several nieces and nephews. Deceased in addition to his parents and wives are four sisters, Josephine Kinney, Evelyn McDonald, Margaret Stewart and Kathrine Carter. Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Rush Funeral Home, Inc. Rogersville, Pa. where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 10, 2014 with Rev. Bruce Judy officiating. Interment will follow in Rosemont Cemetery, Rogersville, Pa. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Rogersville United Methodist Church, PO Box 315, Rogersville, Pa. 15359.
