R. Eugene Hughes, 90, of Graysville, Pa. died at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 7, 2015 in his home after being in failing health since December of 2013.
He was born August 23, 1924 in Richhill Twp., Greene County, Pa. a son of the late Leslie M. and Odessa McCracken Hughes and had resided in Richhill Twp. all his life.
Mr. Hughes was a member of the Unity United Presbyterian Church at Graysville, where he served as an ordained Ruling Elder of the church for over 60 years. He was a former Sunday school teacher, youth leader for many years, and also served on many committees of the Washington Presbytery.
He was a 1942 graduate of the former Richhill Twp. High School in Wind Ridge and attended Penn State University.
Mr. Hughes was a member of the Graysville V.F.D. where he was a former President and served as treasurer for over 35 years, also a member and past Master of the former Harveys Grange #1444 at Graysville.
He was also a former member of the Greene County Farm Bureau, the Greene County Wool Pool, a county committee member of the A.S.C.F., a director with the Greene Fayette County Farm Home Administration.
Mr. Hughes was awarded the Outstanding Cooperator Award in 1979, presented by the Greene County Conservation District for outstanding accomplishments in the conservation of soil, water and related resources.
He and his late wife were the co-owners and operators of a beef cattle and sheep farm in Richhill Twp. all their married life.
On June 16, 1950 he married Mary Lou Jacobs who died February 28, 2013.
Surviving are a son, Alvin, husband of Mary Lee Hughes of Woodland Hills, CA.; a daughter, Diane Hughes of Richhill Twp.; three grandchildren, Jason, husband of Claudia Hughes, Erin and Jonathan Hughes; three great grandchildren, Amber, Ashley and Khamren Hughes;; three sisters-in-law; Judy, wife of Darell McMasters of Southington, Ohio, Marilyn, wife of Tom Pietras of Warren, Ohio and Patricia Jacobs of Center Twp.; five brothers-in-law, Cecil Eugene, husband of Velma Jacobs of Graysville, Merrill, husband of Carol Jacobs of Holbrook, Shirl, companion of Judi Gibson of Nemacolin and Francis, husband of Bonnie Jacobs of Center Twp. and Harold Grimes of Cresson; several nieces and nephews.
Deceased in addition to his parents and wife are, two brothers, Gerald and his wife Carolyn Hughes, Byron, and his wife Virginia Hughes; two sisters, Jane, and her husband Jamesa Abel and Marie Grimes; two brothers-in-law, John, and his wife Mary Martha Jacobs and Glenn Jacobs.
At the request of the deceased there will be no public viewing. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service to be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 12, 2015 at the Unity United Presbyterian Church, Graysville, Pa. with Rev. Walt Stevenson officiating and Pastor David Lowe assisting. Private interment will be held at the convenience of the family. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Washington Health System Hospice Care, 155 Wilson Ave., Washington, Pa. 15301, Unity U.P. Church, or the Graysville V.F.D., both at Graysville, Pa. 15337. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rush Funeral Home, Inc. Rogersville, Pa.
