James A. Gaines, 69, of Carmichaels and formerly of New Freeport, Pa. died at 7:17 p.m. Wednesday, August 15, 2007 in the WVU Hospitals Inc. (Ruby Memorial), Morgantown, W.Va.. after being in failing health since Thanksgiving 2006.He was born May 9, 1938 in Jackson Twp., Greene Co., Pa. a son of Archie Brady and Dorothy Louise Utt Gaines and had resided in New Freeport most of his life prior to moving to Carmichaels in May 2006 with his daughter, Connie Gaines with whom he shared his home.Mr. Gaines was peacetime veteran of the U.S. Navy serving aboard the USS Fort Marion and received the Good Conduct Medal.He was a former employee of Bissett Oil and Gas of New Freeport for 25 years prior to retiring in 1986.Mr. Gaines enjoyed hunting, bird watching especially finches and hummingbirds, completing crossword and search word puzzles, reading westerns and spending time sitting on his porch and time spent with his family and grandchildren.On December 23, 1962, he married Lorna Kay Leek Gaines who died April 8, 2004.Surviving are six children, Sherri, wife of John Nulph, Sr. of New Galilee, Pa.; Mark A., husband of Rita Gaines of Core, W.Va.; Connie L. Gaines, finance' of Rick Clay of Carmichaels, Pa.; Alice, wife of Don Reed of Hickory, Pa.; Matthew "Newt" husband of Michelle Gaines of Graysville and Michael, finance' of Jessica Raulerson of Waynesburg; three sisters, Beulah, wife of Jay Leonard of Waynesburg, Hattie Roskelly of Castle Creek, N.Y. and Irene , wife of Roger Mason of Painesville, Oh.; four brothers, Raymond, husband of Jo Gaines and Edward, husband of Gladys Gaines, all of New Freeport, Robert, husband of Jean Gaines of Spokane, WA. and John Gaines of Waynesburg, Pa.; twenty two grandchildren, seven great grandchildren.Deceased in addition to his wife are two grandchildren, Samantha Lee Sloan and Christopher Eliha Hoag; one brother, Billy Joe Gaines.
