Darwin Eugene "Shorty" Whipkey

Darwin Eugene Shorty Whipkey, 91, of Waynesburg, Pa. died at 7:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 14, 2015 in the Southwest Regional Medical Center, Waynesburg, after being in failing health for the past year.

He was born July 16, 1923 in Aleppo Twp., Greene County, Pa. a son of the late Ray C. and Laura Frances Loudenslager Whipkey.

Mr. Whipkey had resided in Calabash, NC, Richmond, Va. and Washington, Pa. following his retirement prior to returning to Greene County and Waynesburg in 2011.

He was a 1941 graduate of the former Richhill Twp. High School in Wind Ridge where he was the salutarion of his class and participated in all scholastic sports in high school and was named All County First String Center on the Greene County football team in 1940.

Mr. Whipkey was a veteran of World War II where he served with the U.S. Army as a Tech 5 with Co B, 150th Infantry, and was awarded the American Theater and Good Conduct Ribbons and the World War II Victory Medal.

He was an avid golfer, and enjoyed traveling as long as his health permitted, was a former coin collector, and also enjoyed woodworking.

Mr. Whipkey was a former employee of Peoples Natural Gas Company, Standard Oil and was last employed by Consolidated Gas Supply Corporation (Dominion Resources) as a Division Manager prior to retiring in 1984 with over 42 years total service to the natural gas industry.

He was a 32nd degree Mason, a life member of the Shalotte Masonic Lodge, life member of the VFW, and a life member of the 71st Infantry Division and the 644th TD Bn.

On April 11, 1942 he married Selina June Staggers who survives.

Also surviving are a son, Richard, husband of Carol Ann Whipkey of Philippi, W.Va.; a daughter, Patricia Woods of Richmond, Va.; four grandchildren, Richard Whipkey, Jr., Jennifer King, Tiffany Milewski and Jamie Hayes; three great grandchildren, Gabriel and Kaitlyn Hayes, Jacob King; a sister, Hulda Jean Lantz of Wake Forest, NC; a brother, Dale, husband of Lucille Whipkey of Carmichaels; several nieces and nephews.

Deceased in addition to his parents are a granddaughter, Karen Marie Whipkey; two sisters, Mary Whipkey who died at birth and Eileen Smalley; a brother, John Wilfred Whipkey.

Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Rush Funeral Home, Inc. Rogersville, Pa. where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 17, 2015 with Rev. William Parker officiating. Interment will follow in Rosemont Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be accorded by representatives of the U.S. Army and the Waynesburg American Legion Post 330. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Greene County Memorial Hospital Foundation, 7 East High St., Waynesburg, Pa. 15370.
