William Whipkey

William Lawrence Whipkey, Sr., 81, of Holbrook, Pa. died at 1:15 a.m. Friday, February 28, 2014 in his home after being in failing health for the past year. He was born August 21, 1932 in East Finley Twp., Washington County, Pa. a son of the late Fred and Sadie Cumberledge Whipkey and had resided in the Richhill Twp., Greene County area since 1957. Mr. Whipkey attended the former Richhill Twp. High School at Wind Ridge. He was a veteran of the Korean War where he served as a corporal with the U.S. Army in the 1660 Hq. Co., 2nd Armored Division. Mr. Whipkey was a member of the former Wind Ridge V.F.W. and was a life member of the Waynesburg V.F.W. Post 4793, a life member of the Wind Ridge Sportsmans Club, a member of the Greene County Farm Bureau. He was a self-employed farmer all his life, raising Limousine cattle and was a life member of the North American Limousine Association. Mr. Whipkey was employed in pipeline construction in his early years and was a member of locals 132 and 66 for over 10 years, and was last employed by Penn D.O.T for over 25 years prior to retiring in 1994 as a foreman. On January 7, 1955 he married Ruth Ellen Dolly Courtwright who died August 16, 1999. Surviving are two sons, William L. Whipkey, Jr., husband of Donna Whipkey of Graysville, Charles Lee, husband of Katrina Whipkey, of Holbrook; three daughters, Barbara Darlene, wife of Ronald Robison and Teresa, wife of Jeff Fox, both of Holbrook, and Bobbie F., wife of Shawn Grecoe of Lone Pine; nine grandchildren, Matthew and Benji Robison, Chris and Steven Whipkey, Daniel Fox, Wyatt Lee and Emmitt Whipkey, Alexus and Ryan Grecoe; six great grandchildren, Abigail, Henry and Clara Robison, Levi, MacKenzie and Morgan Whipkey; a step-granddaughter, Haley Pierson; a brother, Russell Whipkey of Waynesburg; several nieces and nephews. Deceased in addition to his parents and wife are two brothers, Charles and Ray Whipkey; four sisters, Manerva Whipkey, Helen Moore, Pauline Dailey and Betty Blake. Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday in the Rush Funeral Home, Inc. Rogersville, Pa. where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 3, 2014 with Pastor Vernon K. Berdine officiating. Interment will follow in Centennial Cemetery, Aleppo Twp. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Greene County 4-H Beef Breeding Club, Greene County Ext.
