William S. (Bill) Phillips, Sr., 75, of Washington Twp. (Ruff Creek), Pa. died at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, November 15, 2014 in The Washington Hospital after being in failing health for the past two years. He was born May 14, 1939 in Carmichaels, Pa. a son of the late Charles Edwin Phillips and Cora Alberta Fox Phillips Dreitzler and had resided in Greene County all his life. Mr. Phillips was a peacetime veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was a member and former chaplain of the Waynesburg American Legion Post 330, a member of the Waynesburg Moose Lodge and the Alpine Club in Washington where enjoyed bowling. Mr. Phillips enjoyed woodworking and taking motorcycle trips and golfing as long as his health permitted. He was a former long distance truck driver for Overnite Transport Company and was last employed as a elected supervisor in Washington Twp. for six years prior to retiring 2005. On June 18, 1978 he married Patricia Ellen Cunningham who survives. Also surviving are a son, William (Bud) Phillips, Jr., husband of Serena Spenser Phillips of Pittsburgh and a daughter, Bobbi, wife of Richard Miller of Waynesburg; two step-children, Brian, husband of Nancy McCracken of Wilmington, DE. and Jo Anne, wife of Stephen Francis of Salt Lake City, UT; the mother of his children, Helen McMasters Smochek of Waynesburg; extended family member, Jody Smochek of Waynesburg; a brother, Alpha J. Phillips of Waynesburg; a sister, Patricia, wife of Robert Puthuff of Ruff Creek; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Deceased in addition to his parents are a son Billy Joe Phillips who died at birth; a step-son, Jeffrey Lee McCracken; a sister, Malva Pate. Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Rush Funeral Home, Inc. Rogersville, Pa. where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 19, 2014 with Pastor Lanny Hewitt officiating. Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Military rites will be accorded at the funeral home by the Waynesburg American Legion Post 330. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association.
