Retired High School English TeacherVirginia L. Hughes, 84, of Holbrook (Richhill Twp.) Pa. died at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 16, 2010 in The Washington Hospital, Washington, Pa. after a lengthy battle with a cancer related illness.She was born June 27, 1925 in Altoona, Pa. a daughter of the late Cecil B. and Laura Moore Carothers and had resided in the Nineveh and Richhill Twp. areas since 1950.Mrs. Hughes was a member and substitute pianist at the Unity Presbyterian Church at Graysville, Pa.She was a 1943 graduate of Altoona High School and graduated from Penn State University in 1947 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a certification in Social Studies.Mrs. Hughes was a member of the Family Living division of the Penn State (Greene Co.) Extention Office and a member of the Pennsylvania State Education and the National Education Associations.She was a former English teacher in the Wellsboro (Pa.) School District and was last employed as a high school English teacher with the West Greene School District for a total teaching career of approximately 27 years prior to retiring in 1988.Mrs. Hughes enjoyed reading, raising flowers and was an avid follower of Penn State and West Greene sports and also enjoyed watching the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates.On July 8, 1950 she married Byron Allen Hughes who survives.Also surviving are three sons, Allen, husband of Kathy Hughes of Waynesburg, Charles, husband of Janet Hughes of Sayre, Pa. and Curtis, husband of Jody Hughes of Holbrook; a daughter, Nancy, wife of Carl Burns of Rogersville; eleven grandchildren, Stefani Gresh, Justin Hughes, Kati Altieri, Jessica, Eric, Tyler and Laura Hughes, Rebecca, Sarah, Rachel and Mary Burns; two great grandchildren, Jocelyn and Jace Gresh; a brother, Richard, husband of Marge Carothers of Altoona; several nieces and nephews.Deceased in addition to her parents are three brothers, Fred, James and Charles Carothers.The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Unity Presbyterian Church, c/o 311 Dividing Ridge Rd., Graysville, Pa. 15337.
