Virginia B. Guthrie, 100, formerly of Wind Ridge, Pa. died at 2:30 a.m. Sunday, May 17, 2015 in the Evergreen Assisted Living in Waynesburg, Pa.
She was born July 6, 1914 in Richhill Twp. (Crabapple), Greene County, Pa. a daughter of the late James David and Clara Beulah Gillispie Butcher and had resided in the Richhill Twp. and Wind Ridge areas all her life prior to moving to Waynesburg.
Mrs. Guthrie had been a member of the Wind Ridge Christian Church since 1923 where she served as the church pianist at the age of 9, a Sunday school teacher, secretary of the church board, deaconess and trustee and former financial secretary-treasurer.
She was a member of the former Aleppo Grange #2054 where she had served as the pianist and secretary, the Pomona and State Granges, and was also a member of the former Emerald Chapter #135, now the Martha V. Paul Chapter #404 Order of the Eastern Star, in Washington.
Mrs. Guthrie was a 1932 graduate of the former Richhill Twp. High School in Wind Ridge, a 1936 graduate of the former Waynesburg College with a degree in Secondary Education, and a 1938 graduate of the college with a degree in Elementary Education.
She established the first Reading Lab in Greene County and for 18 years was the sponsor of the National Honor Society at West Greene High School, from where she retired in 1980 after 30 years as a Secondary Education Teacher.
Mrs. Guthrie was also employed as a postal clerk at the Wind Ridge Post Office for eleven years.
Surviving are a daughter, Rosemary Andrew of Waynesburg; a son Kevin, husband of Kathy Guthrie of Graysville; five grandchildren, Jessica Andrew, wife of Michael Wassil, Adam Robert, husband of Dana Andrew, Scott Nathan Andrew and his partner, Ethan Jerrett, Chad, husband of Heather Guthrie and Travis Guthrie, companion of Rhonda Crawford; eight great grandchildren, Matthew and Mark Wassil, Brad, Carter, Ella and Hayden Andrew, Caleb and Hunter Guthrie.
Deceased in addition to her parents are a grandson, Mark Hiram Andrew who died in infancy and two brothers, George W. and Benjamin D. Butcher; son-in-law, Robert C. Andrew.
Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Rush Funeral Home, Inc. Rogersville, Pa. where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 20, 2015 with Rev. Hannah Judy Loughman officiating. Interment will follow in Jacksonville Cemetery, Wind Ridge, Pa. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Amedisys Hospice, 2183 McClellandtown Rd., Masontown, Pa. 15461.
