Ruth G. Day, 97, of Waynesburg, Pa. and formerly of West Finley, Pa. R.D.#2 (Richhill Township) died at 4:40 p.m. Thursday, October 2, 2003 in Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg, Pa. after being seriously ill since September.She was born October 12, 1905 in Richhill Township (Ryerson Station), Greene County, Pa. (in the home of her great grandmother, Martha Ashbrook Hitchcock), a daughter of Simon L. and Edna Cunningham Guthrie.Mrs. Day had resided in the Graysville area from 1932 until moving to Waynesburg in 1999.She was a life member of the Unity Presbyterian Church in Graysville where she served as the first female elder of the church and had served as the church treasurer for over 53 years and was the church pianist for several years.Mrs. Day attended grade school in Graysville and was a graduate of Richhill Township High School and Waynesburg College Normal School (Waynesburg College). She was employed for a few years after college as an elementary school teacher in Clarksville and Center Township (Crouse) one-room schools.Mrs. Day enjoyed reading and knitting and listening to Lawrence Welk music as long as her health permitted.On May 1, 1926 she married Raymond Harvey "Pus" Day who died May 11, 1975.Surviving are one daughter, Betty Ruth Johnson of Waynesburg with whom she made her home since 1999; one son, Thomas H. Day, Sr. of Yucca Valley, CA.; two sisters, Jeanette Wise of Toledo, Ohio and Maude G. Fordyce of Washington; one brother, Kenneth Guthrie of Waynesburg; seven grandchildren, Thomas H. Day, Jr., Brad and Jeffrey Day, Pamela Day Winters, Sharon Day Grossman, David Randal and Dana Ruth Johnson; three great grandchildren; several great great grandchildren.The family suggests memorial contributions be made to a charity of your choice.Deceased are one sister, Virginia Creighton and one brother, Willis B. Guthrie.
