Reed Huffman

Reed O. "Tink" Huffman, 84, of Rogersville, Pa. died at 5:53 a.m. Wednesday, November 8, 2006 in the home of his daughter, Cynthia Grant in New Salem, Fayette County, Pa. after being in failing health for the past four years.He was born December 25, 1921 in Center Twp., Greene Co., Pa. a son of John Francis and Mabel Orndorff Huffman and had resided in Rogersville since 1948. Mr. Huffman was a 1940 graduate of Waynesburg High School where he was an outstanding wrestler at 105# and took second place in the State finals in 1940. He was a veteran of World War II, where he served with the U.S. Army Air Corps as a turret gunner in a B-52 with the 8th Air Force, 4th Combat Wing, 385th Bomb Group, and 550th Bomb Squadron where he flew 28 missions. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 4 Bronze Stars and a Good Conduct Medal.Mr. Huffman was a life member of V.F.W. Post 4793 of Waynesburg and a member of the Waynesburg Moose Lodge #461. He was a member of Operating Engineers Local # 66 of Pittsburgh.He was a former jockey in the tri-state area and a truck driver for Kaplan Trucking and a former employee of John A. Boyer Co. He was last employed as a heavy equipment operator for Mashuda Construction prior to retiring in the late 1960s.Mr. Huffman and his late wife enjoyed country music, dancing, playing cinch and was a self=employed farmer raising beef cattle and sheep in the Oak Forest area as long as his permitted.On November 20, 1948 he married Ruth Riggs who died on June 24, 2001. Surviving are three daughters, Cynthia, wife of Freddie Grant of New Salem, Pa., Jacquelyn "Jackie", wife of Lee Weaver of Oak Forest and Delila "Dee" wife of Jerry Brovage of Kentucky; one grandson, Brad, wife of Christine Weaver of Colorado; three granddaughters, Brooke, wife of Jason Mumford of New Jersey, Shannon, wife of Shawn Filkins of Michigan, and Barbara, wife of Jeff Stafford of Wisconsin; four great grandchildren, Wyatt Mumford, Jerimiah, Garrett and Payton Filkins; three sisters in law, Toddy Riggs Greenlee of Rockport, Massachusetts, Lois Riggs of Waynesburg, Pa. and Wanda Riggs of Virginia; four nephews, Joe Greenlee, Dan Riggs, Jay Riggs and Joseph Riggs; three nieces, Lynn Greenlee Norris, Robin Riggs and Penine Riggs.Deceased in addition to his wife are a son, Reed O. Huffman II and a daughter, Debra Kay Huffman.The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Cystic Fibrosis, Western Pennsylvania Chapter, 810 River Avenue, Suite 100, Pittsburgh, PA. or to the American Cancer Society, Greene County Office, P.O. Box 609, Waynesburg, Pa. 15370.
