Ray L. Whipkey, 83, of Holbrook, Pa. died at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 13, 2007 in Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Waynesburg, Pa.He was born September 28, 1923 in Franklin Twp., Greene Co., Pa. a son of Fred William and Sadie Cumberledge Whipkey and had resided in Richhill Twp. since 1932.Mr. Whipkey was a member of East View Assembly of God Church.He was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army as a PFC Military Policeman with the Co. I 156th Inf. Regiment in the Ardennes, Central Europe and the Rhineland. He was awarded the Purple Heart, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.Mr. Whipkey was a member of the Aleppo Grange #2054, Pomona, State and National Granges and was named Co-Granger of the Year with his late wife in 1991 and was again name Granger of the Year in 2006. He was a member of the West Greene Senior Citizens and West Greene Lions Club. He was a life member of the V.F.W. Post #4793 in Waynesburg and a member of the N.R.A. and the Wind Ridge Sportsmen Club.He served as the Grand Marshall of the 2006 Jacktown Fair Parade.Mr. Whipkey was employed by the former Dun-Mar Gas and Oil for 21 years and was also a former employee of the Globe Gas Corp. and was last employed as a Richhill Twp. Road Supervisor for 14 years prior to retiring in 1988 and was a self-employed farmer all his life as long as his health permitted. On January 31, 1947, he married Wanda Elizabeth Cook Whipkey who died on August 25, 2001.Surviving are a son, Ronald R., husband of Merle Whipkey; one daughter Linda, wife of Jerry Pettit all of Holbrook;two brothers, William Lawrence Whipkey of Holbrook and Earl Russell Whipkey of Waynesburg; six grandchildren, Adrian, husband of Katrina Whipkey, Scarlett Whipkey, wife of Nyle Burns, Keith A. husband of Karrie Pettit, Cindy Pettit, wife of Bill Leek, Jody Pettit, wife of Heath Lemmon and Mark, husband of Chrissy Pettit; fourteen great grandchildren.Deceased in addition to his wife are one grandson, Neil Pettit; four sisters, Betty Blake, Pauline Dailey, Helen Moore and Minerva Whipkey; one brother, Charles Whipkey who died in infancy.
