Ralph I. Goodwin, 88, of Sycamore (Center Twp.), Pa. died at 4:10 a.m. Wednesday, November 18, 2009 in his home after being diagnosed with Leukemia in October.He was born June 3, 1921 in Center Twp. (Rutan), Greene Co. Pa. a son of the late G.L. and Anna Mae Clutter Goodwin and had be a resident of Center Twp. all his life.Mr. Goodwin was a member and deacon of the former South Ten Mile Baptist Church and was a 1941 graduate of Center Twp. High School.He was a veteran of World War II where he served with the U.S. Army as a Tech 4 with the 3rd Amphibious Engineers Brigade in New Guinea and was awarded the Good Conduct, World War II Victory, American Campaign and Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medals.Mr. Goodwin was a member of V.F.W. Post 4793 and a member and past commander of the American Legion Post 330 both in Waynesburg, a 50 year member of both Harvey's Grange 1444 and the Graysville Lodge of the Knights of Pythias and was a former member of the Waynesburg Senior Bowling League.He was an avid cinch player, enjoyed playing bingo and the lottery and enjoyed traveling as long as his health permitted and the time he was able to spend with his family and grandchildren, he also enjoyed following his grandchildren in the school sports programs and following the Steelers.Mr. Goodwin was a self employed farmer all his life, beginning with a dairy and later raising beef cattle, a former contract driver for the Carnation Milk company, was employed by Penn D.O.T. for 7 years, a former custodian for the West Greene School District and was last employed as a machinist with the former Plasteel Products Corp. in Washington for 20 years prior to retiring in 1986.On August 7, 1946 he married Carol Dene Parson who survives.Also surviving are two sons, Johnny Bill, husband of Dede Goodwin of Houston, Texas and Tom, husband of Cindy Goodwin of Center Twp.; two daughters, Rita, wife of Spencer Roberts of Southern Pines, N.C. and Joyce, wife of Harry L. Watson of Center Twp.; a brother, Raymond Goodwin of Center Twp.; a sister, Ruth, wife of Joe Patterson of New Port Richey, Fl; 7 grandchildren, Wesley and Haden Watson, Brandi Ballard, Colby, Michelle, Zachery and Tyler Goodwin; several nieces and nephews.Deceased in addition to his parents are a son who died at birth, Darwin Eugene Goodwin; a grandson, Justin Watson; a sister, Dorothy Forshey Harvey.Graveside military rites will be accorded by representatives of the U.S. Army, American Legion Post 330, V.F.W. Post 4793 and the D.A.V. Post 123 all of Waynesburg. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to either, the Hospice Care of The Washington Hospital, 155 Wilson Ave., Washington, Pa. 15301 or the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, P.O. Box 4072, Pittsfield, MA 01202.
