Biography
O. Richard Salsbury, 79, of West Alexander, Pa., died at 11:20 a.m., Sunday, June 15, 2014 in his home following a lengthy illness. He was born May 23, 1935 in Scenery Hill, Washington Co., Pa., a son of the late Oscar Otto and Florence Clarinda Mitchell Salsbury and had been a resident of the state of Virginia for several years, prior to moving to West Alexander in 1973. He was a 1954 graduate of Trinity High School. Mr. Salsbury was an active volunteer with the Scouts in Virginia as a Weblo Leader and Cub and Boy Scout Master. He was a former volunteer with I.G.C.O. (forerunner of the current 911 system) in Washington County, and was a former member and past President of the West Alexander Borough Council. Mr. Salsbury enjoyed reading, playing church league dartball and solitaire, and doing picture puzzles that he framed and displayed in his home. He was a member of the West Alexander United Methodist Church, where he formerly served as treasurer, a former member of the church council, and a former delegate to the annual conference. Mr. Salsbury was a peacetime veteran with the Army National Guard, where he served as an E-4 with the Hq & Hq Co., 110th Infantry in Washington. He was last employed as a Cable Splicing Technician with the former Bell Telephone Company of Pa. for 34 years prior to retiring in 1990. Mr. Salsbury was married to Carol Mae Hixenbaugh who died in 1972, and on October 2, 1974 he married Marie Antionette Galizia Gatalano who died on February 11, 1988. Surviving are three sons, Barry, husband of Kathy Salsbury of Claysville, Pa., Byron, husband of Diane Salsbury of Virginia Beach, Va., and Bruce, husband of Kathy Salsbury of Suffolk, Va.; a daughter, Beverly, wife of Larry Calvert of Washington; a step-daughter, Nicole, wife of Rich Hale of Stockton, CA.; 10 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his pet dog Toby. Deceased in addition to his parents and wives, are three brothers, Kenneth, Harold, and Eugene Salsbury; and two sisters, Josephine Ruff and Irene Gomez. Friends will be received from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m., the time of funeral and committal services, Wednesday, June 18, 2014, in the West Alexander United Methodist Church, West Alexander, Pa. Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to either the West Alexander United Methodist Church, P.O.
