Leroy E. "Buck" Butterfield, 70, of Washington and formerly of Claysville, Pa. died at 11:10 a.m. Saturday, December 30, 2006 in his home after suffering with a cancer related illness. He was born August 5, 1936 in Blaine Twp., Washington Co., Pa. a son of Roy and Sarah Emma Cunningham Butterfield and had resided in Claysville for most of his life prior to moving to Washington in May 2006.Mr. Butterfield was a 1954 graduate of Claysville High School.He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served with the U.S. Air Force as an A/2C with the 3345th USAF Hospital, Chanute AFB. He was a member of the American Legion Post 639 in Claysville for 33 yrs and a member of the Post Drill team.Mr. Butterfield was employed as a heavy equipment operator with Operating Engineers Local 66 for 40 years and worked with the former Herb Messenger Co., McAnallen Bros. And Joseph Vaccarrello Construction prior to retiring in 1999.He was an avid golfer and participated in the construction of the Double Dam Golf Course (Dogwood Hills) in Claysville, enjoyed McGuffey wrestling, football, softball, bowling and woodworking. He coached midget league football in Claysville for 16 years and was honored as Coach of The Year in 1967.On September 24, 1988, he married Janice Kay Grudi Butterfield who survives.Surviving in addition to his wife are six daughters, Debra, wife of Rick Fanning of Claysville, Tina Parker of Washington, Pam, wife of Rick Long of Claysville, Kathy, wife of Jim Johnson of Washington, Jodie, wife of Adrian Fletcher of Washington, Julie, wife of Lee Lesslie of Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers, Kenneth "Butch", husband of Joyce Butterfield of Washington, Pa. and Jack, husband of Leona Butterfield of Taylorstown; two sisters, Wilda Dillon of Avella and Ethel "Pete", wife of Don Shriver of Claysville; ten grandchildren, Angela Holdsworth, Derrick and Darcell Long, Andrea Fanning, Zach Parker, Preston and Camden Fletcher, Nathan Lesslie, Hunter and Luke Johnson. The family suggests memorial contributions to Albert Gallatin Home Care and Hospice, 275 Meadowlands Blvd., Washington, PA. 15301.
