Leroy Armstrong

Proud Member of the U.M.W.A.Leroy C. Armstrong, 70, of Whiteley Twp., Greene Co. Pa., and formerly of the West Alexander and Spraggs area, died at 5:25 a.m. Saturday, May 19, 2012 in his home of a cancer related illness.He was born June 16, 1941 in Donegal Twp. Washington Co., Pa. a son of the late Elmer W. Amos and Florence M. Riggle Amos, and was adopted and raised by his aunt and uncle, the late James E. and Sylvia Armstrong.Mr. Armstrong was a 1959 graduate of the former West Alexander High School.He enjoyed working on his farm and raising his horses, dogs and cats.Mr. Armstrong was a veteran of the Viet Nam War where he served with the U.S. Army.He was a former employee of Valley Camp Coal Co. in Elm Grove, W.Va., North American Coal in Ohio and was last employed as a continuous miner operator for 26 years with the former Cumberland Mine prior to retiring in 2006.Mr. Armstrong was a member of the Waynesburg American Legion Post 330, a life member of the V.F.W. Post 3491 in Carmichaels and a proud member of the U.M.W.A.On August 7, 1998 he married Sandra Lee Hokenson who survives.Also surviving are two daughters, Shana D. Armstrong of Mather and Shelly R., wife of Joseph Marshman of Washington; a step son, Stephen, husband of Roseanne Austin of Connellsville; a brother, George, husband of Sis Amos of Benwood, W.Va.; three sisters, Dorothy Ullom and Margie Conoway both of West Alexander and Mackie Frye of Majorsville, W.Va.; nine grandchildren, Dalton Durbin, Levi and Logan Shaw, Carly, Megan, Leanne, Kelsey, Therese and Ian Austin.Deceased in addition to his parents and adoptive parents are two brothers, Charles and Paul Amos; two sisters, Louise Howe and Mary Philabaum.
