Leo D. Leichter, Sr., 76, of Wind Ridge, Pa. died at 3:06 a.m. Monday, July 14, 2003 in the Reynolds Memorial Hospital, Glen Dale, W. Va. after being in failing health for the past three years.He was born June 28, 1927 in Rock Lick, W.Va. a son of John Henry and Clara Jane Wendt Leichter and has been a resident of Richhill Township, Greene County, Pa. most of his life.Mr. Leichter attended the Crabapple Community Church and has served as the sexton of the Rock Lick Cemetery(W.Va.) for the past several years.He enjoyed caring for his small farm, gardening, and genealogy and was a Civil War enthusiast.Mr. Leichter was a veteran of World War II where he served with the U.S. Army as a private first class with the 80th Field Artillery Battalion. He was stationed in the Pacific Theatre of Operations and was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign ribbon, Army of Occupation Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.He was a 1945 graduate of Richhill High School.Mr. Leichter was employed by the former McCracken Lumber and Stave Mill prior to being employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 35 years, as a rural mail carrier from the Wind Ridge office retiring in 1991.On February 28, 1967 he married Mary Jane Newman Leichter who survives.Also surviving are one son, Leo Douglas Leichter, Jr. of Wind Ridge; four brothers, Edward G. Leichter of Cape Coral, Fl., Dwayne R. Leichter of Bloomington, IN., William Leichter of Covington, Va. and Arthur Leichter of Bridgeville, Pa.; two grandchildren, Andrew Anthony and Katelyn Rose Leichter.Deceased are a daughter who died at birth; two brothers, John and Lyle Leichter.The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the National Lymphoma Society or your local American Cancer Society.
