Joseph Reed Jones

Joseph Reed Jones, 94, of Waynesburg, Pa. and formerly of Richhill Twp., Greene County, Pa. died at 10:15 a.m. Thursday, October 22, 2015 in the home of his daughter, Barbara Rae Swaniger, after being in failing health for the past four years.
He was born August 8, 1921 in Center Twp. (Rutan), Greene County, Pa. a son of the late Clarence Samuel and Zora Rae Smith Jones and had resided in Richhill Twp. most of his life.
Mr. Jones was a member of the former Bristoria Presbyterian Church, where he served as superintendent, deacon, elder and treasurer, and was a 1940 graduate of the former Richhill Twp. High School at Wind Ridge.
He was also a member of the former Harveys Grange 1444, where he served as a past master and gatekeeper, was a 6th degree member of the State Grange.
Mr. Jones was a veteran of World War II where he served with the U.S. Navy as an electricians mate, 2nd class, and was a part of the radar detachment with operation iceberg on Okinawa from March until June 1945.
Mr. Jones was a self-employed farmer all his life, farming the family farm for over 76 years, and was also employed as a custodian with the West Greene School District for over 15 years and as a laborer with the Richhill Twp. Road Supervisors for approximately 20 years.
He was formerly married to the late Wilma L. Crawford Jones Lawson.
Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Rae Swaniger, wife of William C. Blystone of Waynesburg, with whom he shared a home and Linda Sue Sis Owens, companion of Caesar Garcia of Greenfield, IN.; two grandchildren, Daniel Allen Owens and W. Reed Bonnichsen; three great grandchildren, Jessica Rae Owens Singer, Ashley Lynn and Maranda Nicole Keslar; a great grandson, James Daniel Anthony Singer; a sister, Faye Maxine Jones of Waynesburg; several nieces and nephews
Deceased in addition to his parents and former wife are five brothers, Robert, Keith, Arthur, Delbert and Hubert Jones; two sisters, Margery Jean Jones and Betty Dale Chapman.
Friends will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday in the Rush Funeral Home, Inc. Rogersville, Pa. where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 27, 2015 with Pastor Nelson Boone officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Richhill Twp. Graveside military rites will be accorded by members of the U.S. Navy and the Waynesburg American Legion Post 330. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to your local American Cancer Society.
