James T. Wood, 95, of Holbrook, Pa. R.D.#1 died at 10:10 a.m. Monday, May 26, 2003 in the Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg, Pa. after being ill for the past three weeks.He was born July 27, 1907 in Jackson Township, Greene County, Pa. a son of Thomas and Flora Estella Minton Wood. Mr. Wood is the fifth generation to reside on the registered Century Farm, which has been in the family name since the 1840's.Mr. Wood was a life member of the Holbrook Christian Church.He was a former member of the East Finley Horseshoe Pitching Club.He enjoyed trapping, deer hunting, square dancing and horseshoe pitching as long as his health permitted. Mr. Wood was a champion horseshoe pitcher and during the 1960's he competed regularly and had a regulation lighted clay court and flagpole installed at his home. In 1969 he won first place in Class B competition at the Washington County Fair, and in the same year he won second place in Class A in the East Finley Horseshoe Club competition. He was awarded a champion plaque for his contributions to horseshoe pitching by the West Greene Pioneer Festival committee in 2000.He was a former employee of the Pa. Game Commission and the Pennsylvania Department of Highways, and was last employed by the National Transit Oil Pipeline Company as a laborer and truck driver for approximately ten years prior to retiring in 1972.On July 27, 1931 he married Mary Elizabeth Wise Wood who died August 14, 1989.Surviving are two daughters, Helen Louise Clark of Waynesburg, Pa. and Martha Jean Tedrow of Parma, Ohio; four grandchildren, Joseph W. Clark, Barbara Clark Clemens, who was his caregiver and with whom he shared his home since 1998, Donna Jean Tedrow Stec and Cynthia L. Tedrow Kitko; seven great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.Deceased are a son, James Clifford Wood and a daughter, Patricia Joanne Wood who both died in infancy; two sisters, Margaret Bland and Mary E. Grimes.Mr. Wood was the last of his immediate family.
