James A. (Jim) Marling, 91, of New Freeport, Pa. died at 9:20 p.m. Thursday, July 5, 2007 in his home.He was born October 12, 1915 in Cameron, W.Va. a son of H.H. (Coon) and Florence Courtwright Marling and had resided in the Cameron area most of his life prior to moving to the New Freeport area in 1961.Mr. Marling was Methodist by faith.He was a 1933 graduate of Cameron (W.Va.) High School and graduated in 1935 from Lincoln Electric in Cleveland, Ohio.Mr. Marling was veteran of WW 2 where he served with the U.S. Army as a T/Sgt, and communications chief in the 1345th Engineer Combat Battalion. He participated in the battle in the Aleutian Islands and received the American Defense Service Medal, American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon w/1 bronze star and the WW 2 Victory Medal.He was recognized as a participant in the battle for the Aleutian Islands by the Governor of Alaska in early 2007.Mr. Marling was employed as a project manager by the former Blue Grass Cooperage based out of Kentucky for 12 years and in 1961 he and his wife purchased the general store at Garrison (Pa.) and operated as the Marling Tack Shop and General Store until retiring in 1981.He enjoyed traveling, dining out and the time spent with his family and especially his 2 great grandsons.On October 17, 1942 he married Lillian Dell Miller who survives.Also surviving are a son, James B. (J.B.), husband of Sandra Marling of New Freeport; a sister, Florence "Turk" Richmond of Gladstone, Missouri; a granddaughter, Michelle, wife of Larry Anderson; two great grandsons, Colton and Bryce Anderson.Deceased are a daughter, Jenny Lynn Marling who died Feb. 12, 2004; three brothers, Paul, Samuel and H. H. (Coonie) Marling, Jr.; three sisters, Mae Yoders, Georgie Stansberry and Thelma Jones.
