James H. Helphenstine, 80, of Wind Ridge, Pa. died at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 14, 2010 in his home.He was born June 27, 1930 in Wind Ridge a son of the late James William and Corale Hughes Headley Helphenstine and had resided in Wind Ridge all his life.Mr. Helphenstine was a member of the Fairview United Methodist Church at Graysville, Pa.He was also a life member of the V.F.W. Post 4793 in Waynesburg and the Cameron American Legion Post 18, a member of the Military Order of the Cootie in Waynesburg, the Waynesburg Masonic Lodge 153 FAM, the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Pittsburgh, a charter member of the Richhill Twp. V.F.D. and a member of the Moose Lodge 461 of Waynesburg.Mr. Helphenstine was a veteran of the Korean War where he served as a TE 3 with the U.S. Navy.He was a former employee of the Department of the Navy (Communications), in Norfolk, Va. and was last employed by the former Columbia Gas Transmission Corp. for 41 years prior to retiring as a well tender in 1996.On May 21, 1953 he married Carmen "Corky" Cortez who survives.Also surviving are two sons, James Alan, husband of Wendy Helphenstine and Jon Cortez Helphenstine both of Wind Ridge; two daughters, Mary Beth Tedrow of Wind Ridge and Lori Moore of Dilliner, Pa.; seven grandchildren, Brent and Adam Helphenstine, Matt Tedrow, Erin Tedrow Klaner and Jessica Tedrow Carpenter, Johnathan and Maria Moore; seven great grandchildren.Deceased in addition to his parents is a grandson, A. Lance Helphenstine who died Jan. 27, 1996 and a brother, Maurice "Skip" Helphenstine. Mr. Helphenstine was the last of his immediate family.The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Richhill V.F.D, PO Box 1, 120 Ferrell Ave., Wind Ridge, Pa. 15380.
