Obituary for James A. Carter
James A. Carter, 91, of Claysville, Pa. died at 9:58 a.m. Thursday, July 30, 2015 in the Presbyterian Senior Center, Washington, Pa. after being in failing health since May.
He was born October 9, 1923 in Morris Twp., Washington County, Pa. a son of the late James Harry and Adelaide Carry Andrew Carter and had resided in Morris Twp. all his life.
Mr. Carter was a member of the Concord Presbyterian Church where he had served as an elder for several years, and was a 1942 graduate of the former Morris Twp. (Prosperity) High School.
He was a member of the Claysville Masonic Lodge #147 FAM and the Pittsburgh Shriners, and served on the board of directors for the Canonsburg Mutual Fire Insurance for over 50 years, and also served on the board of the Prosperity Cemetery Association.
Mr. Carter and his wife owned and operated the East Finley Store for 17 years, he was an employee of the former Sprowls Country Hardware Store in Claysville for ten years, and a former instructor at the P.O. Peterson Handwriting Center in Greensburg, and retired as the owner and operator of the former James Carter Company, builders of several pole and metal barns in Washington and Greene Counties.
On September 14, 1945 he married Mary Ann Auld who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Mark Carter at home; two daughters, Pamela Carter of Eighty Four and Deborah, wife of Tom Chatlak of Canonsburg; three grandchildren, Matthew Chatlak, Nicole Scott and Zachary Carter; three great grandchildren, Carter Scott, Benjamin Chatlak and Braiden Carter; two brothers, Jon, husband of Pat Carter of Claysville and Robert, husband of Marlene Carter of Bellefontaine, Ohio.
Deceased in addition to his parents are a son, Christopher A. Carter who died May 17, 2015; a sister, Joan Kowalski; a brother, Jay Carter.
At the request of the deceased there will be no public visitation or funeral service. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service to be held Monday, August 3, 2015 at 11 a.m. in the Concord Presbyterian Church with Rev. Russ Baird officiating. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Concord Presbyterian Church, 155 Old Concord Rd., Prosperity, Pa. 15329. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rush Funeral Home, Inc. Rogersville, Pa.
