Herschel Bissett

Herschel U. Bissett, 93, of Waynesburg, Pa. and formerly of New Freeport died unexpectedly at 10:58 p.m. Wednesday, December 5, 2007 in the emergency room at Southwest Regional Medical Center, Waynesburg. He was born January 14, 1914 in New Freeport, Pa. a son of Calvin Newton and Lucinda Belle Ullom Bissett and had resided in the New Freeport area all his life prior to moving to Waynesburg. Mr. Bissett was a member of the New Freeport Church of Christ where he formerly served as an elder and Bible class teacher for several years. He was a 1931 graduate of Aleppo High School. Mr. Bissett was employed from the middle 1930's until 1939 in various aspects of road construction in Washington and Greene County prior to being employed by his late brother Charles in 1944 in the Bissett Construction and Oil Gas Company, and from 1962 was co-owner of the business until purchasing the business from Charles in 1972, and retired in 1979. Following retirement he pursued other interests in the gas and oil fields in Pa. and W.Va. as long as his health permitted. On May 9, 1936 he married Doris Louise Hennen who died April 10, 2001. Surviving are two sons, John H. (Jack) Bissett of Winters, CA. and Dennis L., husband of Debbie Bissett of Flossmoor, Il.; one daughter, Linda L. Cooper of New Freeport; six grandchildren, David B. and Cathy L. Cooper, Kirk E., Jeremy, Megan and Dana Bissett; two great grandchildren, Jordan and Alison Cooper. Several nieces and nephews. Deceased are six brothers, Charles C., William, Raymond, Earl, George and Cecil Bissett; six sisters, Irma Egan, Frances Bissett, Mary Phillips, Naomi Huffman, Mildred Six and a sister in infancy. Mr. Bissett was the last of his immediate family. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the Rush Funeral Home, Inc., Rogersville, Pa. where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, December 10, 2007 with Evangelist Denver Cooper officiating. Interment will follow in Centennial Cemetery, Aleppo Twp. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the W. Va.
