Herman T. "Tommy" Cheek, 81, of Wind Ridge, Pa. died at 2:40 p.m. Saturday, January 6, 2007 in The Washington Hospital, Washington, Pa. after being in failing health for the past several years. He was born December 26, 1925 in Washington, Pa. a son of Roy and Rachael Anna Welling Cheek and had resided in Richhill Twp., Greene County, Pa. most of his life.Mr. Cheek attended Crabapple Community Church.He was a veteran of World War II where he served with the U.S. Army as a Tech 5 with Company C, 1256th Engineer Combat Battalion in Central Europe and the Rhineland and was awarded the EAME Campaign, Good Conduct and the World War II Victory Medals.Mr. Cheek was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4793 of Waynesburg.He was a former steelworker on Neville Island, Pittsburgh and a former employee of Penn Dot for eight years where he worked on the construction of Interstate 70. He was last employed as a forklift operator with the former Brockway Glass in Washington.Mr. Cheek was a self-employed farmer throughout his adult working life.He enjoyed coon, small game and deer hunting, singing, playing guitar, pitching horseshoes and watching baseball as long as his health permitted.On August 10, 1947, he married Dorothy Helen Tennant Cheek who survives.Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Nora, wife of Sonny Rhome of Wind Ridge and Martha "Marty" Thornton of Pittsburgh; thirteen grandchildren, Forest, Eric, Laurie and Scott Rhome, Tonie, Rebecca, Herman, Butchie and Donita Thornton, Aron Blackburn, Matt, Mary and Lee Cheek; six great grandchildren; and a daughter in law, Brenda White Cheek of Washington, Pa.Deceased are one daughter, Scarlett L. Cheek who died in infancy; a son, Herbert L. "Butch" Cheek who died December 10, 1990 and a sister, Virginia Mary Cheek who died June 23, 1980.He was the last of his immediate family.The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society (Greene County), 197 West Strawberry St., Waynesburg, Pa. 15370
