Obituary for George Sligar Sr

George T. Sligar, Sr., 94, of Center Twp. (Rutan) Greene Co. Pa. and formerly of Pittsburgh died at 2:47 a.m. Thursday, November 19, 2009 in the Ewing Manor-West Nursing Home, Rogersville, Pa.He was born September 16, 1915 in Triadelphia, W.Va. a son of Thomas and Wilma Sisson Sligar and had resided in the Pittsburgh area from 1941 until moving to Greene Co. in 1972.Mr. Sligar was a member and trustee of the Fairview U.M. Church, Graysville, Pa.He was a 1933 graduate of Triadelphia (W.Va.) High School and a 1938 graduate of the former California State Teachers College (California University of Pa).Mr. Sligar was a former woodworking instructor and school bus driver at Baldwin High School, Pittsburgh and was employed by the former Option Tool in Pittsburgh prior to establishing Option Woodworking in 1951 in his home, and later relocating his business to Center Twp. Greene Co. Pa. in 1972 where he continued to design and build custom furniture, shipping nationwide, prior to retiring in 2000.He enjoyed fishing, mowing his lawn, cutting firewood and following football.On November 23, 1939 he married Betsy Louise McKee who died June 9, 1978, and on February 1, 1980 he married Wilma Frances Lewis Nelson who survives.Also surviving are two sons, George T. Sligar, Jr. of Holbrook and Edward Sligar of Pittsburgh; a daughter, Nancy, wife of Robert Dierken of Sarasota, Fl.; step children, Karl Lloyd, husband of Tina Nelson of Pawley's Island, S. Carolina, William Ronald, husband of Kay Nelson of Shippensburg, Charles Roger, husband of Wilma Nelson of Center Twp. (Rutan) and Peggy L., wife of John Labrum of Corona, CA.; 22 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren.Deceased in addition to his parents is a brother, James Sligar.Mr. Sligar was the last of his immediate family.The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Fairview U.M. Church, 331 Poland Run Rd., Graysville, Pa. 15337. .
