George O. Grimes, 87, of Franklin Twp., Greene Co., Pa. (East View) died at 5:55 p.m. Tuesday, February 14, 2006 in The Washington Hospital.He was born November 7, 1918 in Jackson Twp., Greene Co. a son of Orville Othello and Carrie Lee Orndoff Grimesand had resided in Greene Co. most of his life.Mr. Grimes was a member of the Throckmorton United Methodist Church where he formerly served as Sunday school superintendent, Sunday school teacher, trustee and as a member of the building fund committee.He was a 1937 graduate of Center Twp. High School.Mr. Grimes was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Army where he served as an Air Corps Cadet and later as a gunner in light artillery with Cannon Co., 424th Infantry in Northern France, Rhineland and the Ardennes and received the Bronze Star, Battle of the Bulge Commemorative Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, WWII Victory Medal, Army of the Occupation Medal (Germany), Good Conduct Medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 3 Bronze Service Star. He was a member of the Waynesburg Masonic Lodge 153 F Syria Shriners A.A.O.N.M.S. of Pittsburgh; Washington - Greene County Caravan #2 of the Syria Temple, Lodge Council Chapter, Consistory Valley of Pittsburgh and a member of the American Legion Post 330 of Waynesburg. He was honored with a Lifetime and Charter Member of the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C.Mr. Grimes was a volunteer coach and past president of the Waynesburg Little League Association and was a member of Greene County Habitat for Humanity and volunteer with the Waynesburg Salvation Army. He was a member of the Fort Jackson Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution.He was an avid carpenter and woodworker and built the house in which he lived. Mr. Grimes was employed as a Chief Engineer with Equitable Gas Company in Rogersville for forty-four years prior to retiring in 1981. On June 5, 1937, he married Kathryn (Katie) Myers Grimes who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Linda (Pug), wife of Allen Smith of Masontown, Pa; six grandchildren, Michelle A. Smith Voithofer, wife of Fred Voithofer of Smithfield, Beth A. Smith Beck, wife of Roy Beck of Masontown, Amy Smith of Dubai, U.A.E., Sarah Grimes Lawrence of Nashville, TN., Michael Douglas Grimes Lawrence and Frances Diana Lawrence, both of Oklahoma City, Ok,; five great grandchildren; widow of his deceased son Edwin Michael Grimes, Annie Halley Grimes Lawrence, wife of Frank Lawrence of Gunther, Al.; three brothers, Charles, husband of Oneita Stockdale Grimes of New Freeport, William, husband of Carolyn Wood Grimes, Forest, husband of Leone Bissett Grimes all of Waynesburg; several nieces and nephews.Deceased are a son, Edwin Michael Grimes; a grandson, Douglas Allen Smith; two brothers, Halfred B. and LeRoy E. Grimes; and a sister, Glenna Grimes.A memorial service will be conducted by the Waynesburg Masonic Lodge 153 FAM Friday at 7 p.m. in the funeral home.Military graveside rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 330, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4753 and Disabled American Veterans Post 123, all of Waynesburg.The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Throckmorton U.M.
