Fred W. Hewitt, 88, of Graysville, Pa. died at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 5, 2005 in Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Waynesburg, Pa. after being seriously ill since January. He was born June 9, 1917 in Graysville, Pa. a son of John Nicholas and Lulu Zilphia Pettit Hewitt and has been a resident of the Graysville area all of his life. Mr. Hewitt was a member of Unity Presbyterian Church in Graysville and a member of the West Greene Senior Citizens. He was a veteran of World War II where he served in the US Army as a TEC 4 with the Battery "C" 633RD Anti-Aircraft Artillery AW Battalion. He was a participant in the Battle of Normandy and also served in Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon. Mr. Hewitt was employed by the former Findlay Refractories in Washington as a finisher and straw boss for over 30 years prior to retiring in 1979.He was a well known fiddle player and played with the stage band at Wheeling Jamboree for several years and a member of the former Hewitt Brothers Band who played for area square dances, weddings and anniversaries as long as his health permitted. Mr. Hewitt was an avid wood worker, having hand made fiddles, mandolins and dulcimers. On July 3, 1954 he married Betty Jean Chambers Hewitt who survives.Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Lanny C., husband of Jo Ann Schweitzer Hewitt of Wind Ridge, and Lynn E. Hewitt of Springfield, TN.; three grandsons, Ryan, Brandon and Eric Hewitt; two granddaughters, Laura and Sara Hewitt; several nieces and nephews.Deceased are a son who died at birth; five brothers, Dolph, Don, Herman, James and John Hewitt; three sisters, Virginia "Sally" Barnhart, Dorothy "Dot" Williams and Jane Whitlatch.He was the last of his immediate family.
