Donald Edward "Shorty" Waychoff

Donald E. Shorty Waychoff, 81, of Wayne Twp., (Oak Forest), died at 7:50 p.m. Thursday, October 1, 2015 in the home where he was born and raised, after being seriously ill for the past two months.

He was born February 16, 1934, a son of the late Harry Lee and Florence Stewart Waychoff and had resided in the family home most of his life.

Mr. Waychoff was a member and trustee of the Pursley Baptist Church, a member of the N.R.A. and a 1952 graduate of the former Center Twp. High School in Rogersville, where he played football, baseball and basketball.

He loved and adored his family and grandchildren.

Mr. Waychoff was a veteran of the Korean War where he served as a Fire Control Technician 3rd Class with the U.S. Navy, aboard the USS Norton Sound, and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the China Service Medal.

He was an avid hunter (animals and ginseng), enjoyed all sports, including the Pittsburgh Pirates, Steelers and Womens basketball, and also enjoyed cutting and splitting firewood, using only hand tools.

On July 1, 1960 he married Betty Jo Thompson who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Kelli, wife of John Hart of Waynesburg and Lisa Belding of Wayne Twp.; two grandchildren, Chett Belding and Joel, husband of Becky Morris; a brother, Charles R. (Bill) Waychoff of Leesburg, FL.; a sister, Texa Myers of Coraopolis; several nieces and nehpews.

Deceased in addition to his parents are, a son, Lyle J. Waychoff who died February 17, 2008; a brother Harry Robert (Bob) Waychoff; three sisters, Lana Corwin, Helen Booth and Betty Jo Edgar.

Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday in the Rush Funeral Home, Inc. Rogersville, Pa. where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, October 5, 2015 with Pastor Robert Mooney officiating. Interment will follow in Pursley Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be accorded by representatives of the U.S. Navy and the Waynesburg American Legion Post 330. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to your local American Cancer Society.
