Donald J. Crawford, 83, formerly of Holbrook, Pa. (Jackson Twp.) died at 6:25 p.m. Sunday, June 5, 2011 in the Louis A. Johnson VAMC, Clarksburg, W.Va., surrounded by his loving family after being in failing health for the past several years.He was born June 28, 1927 in Holbrook (Center Twp.) Pa. a son of the late Jesse Leasure and Fannie Ellen Morris Crawford and had resided in the Holbrook area most of his life.Mr. Crawford formerly attended the Willow Grove Independent Baptist Church in Holbrook and was a member of the former Bethel Community Church at Pine Bank where he served on the board of trustees.He was a veteran of World War II where he served as a private with the U.S. Army in Co C 11th Tag Bn IRTC and the Korean War where he served as a private with the Field Training Co 9405 TU, signal school. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars and the United Nations Service Medal.Mr. Crawford was a former Jackson Twp. road supervisor and was last employed as a bus driver for the former Grim Transportation in New Freeport prior to retiring in 1981.He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening as long as his health permitted.On October 28, 1955 he married Mabel Morris who survives.Also surviving is a son, Edison I. Crawford of West Union, W.Va.; a step daughter, Eva Jean, wife of James (Butch) Pettit of Holbrook; a grandson, Travis I. Crawford; two step grandchildren, Joyce Ann Kiger and Douglas Pettit; 2 step great grandchildren; a sister, Wilma, wife of Lester Bungard of Aleppo.Deceased in addition to his parents are a daughter, Donna Jean Crawford; a step grandson, Barry Pettit; two sisters, Virginia Crawford who died in infancy and Ruby Craig; three brothers, W. Leasure, Franklin L. and R. Duane Crawford; ; three sisters, Thelma Bane, Martha Montgomery and Mae Truman; one brother, Jesse Lee Crawford.The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society or the Willow Grove Independent Baptist Church, 756 Hargus Creek Rd., Waynesburg, Pa. 15370.
