Dillie R. Smalley, 94, of Dover, Ohio and formerly of Graysville, Pa. died at 5:50 a.m. Thursday, September 15, 2011 in the Park Village Assisted Living in Dover.Mr. Smalley was born November 27, 1916 in Graysville, Pa. a son of the late Clark A. and Metta Lee Church Smalley, and had resided in Columbus, Ohio from 1964 until moving to Dover in April 2008.He was a 1936 graduate of the former Richhill High School in Wind Ridge.Mr. Smalley was a member of the United Methodist Church of the Messiah in Westville, Ohio.He was a veteran of World War II where he served as a S/Sgt in the U.S. Army with Co A, 702nd Tank Battalion in Northern France and Rhineland and was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and a Purple Heart and was a Prisoner of War.He was a life member of Motts Military Museum, Inc. in Groveport, Ohio, the D.A.V. Buckeye State 8, V.F.W. Post 8586 in Perrysville, Ohio, the GASCO Club of Columbia Gas in Ohio and the American Ex-P.O.W.'s and was a member of the Masonic Lodge #185 in Salem, Ohio.He was employed by the former Columbia Gas of Ohio, Inc. in Columbus for over 40 years, last serving as a purchasing agent prior to retiring in December 1989.Mr. Smalley was married to Eileen Lydia Whipkey who died in 1940, Dorothy Geraldine Grim who died in 1961 and on May 1, 1964 he married Eileen Goldie McCullough Headley who died February 12, 2008.Surviving are a daughter, Rebecca L., wife of Deward Hixenbaugh of Dover; three step daughters, Dixie, wife of Rex Rhome of Wind Ridge, Connie, wife of David Pearson of Charlotte, N.C. and Vickie, wife of Richard Hensley of Gahanna, Ohio; 13 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren.Deceased in addition to his parents and wives are four sisters, Lilly Smith, Dora Teagarden, Edna Anderson and Clara Patterson; two brothers, John and Harry Smalley.Mr. Smalley was the last of his immediate family.
