Charles Varner

Charles M. Varner, 62, of Wind Ridge, Pa. R.D. #1, died at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2005 in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pa. following a brief illness. He was born July 20, 1942 in Nineveh, Pa. a son of Maxine Varner Norris of Youngstown, Ohio and the late Warren Eugene Tennant. Mr. Varner had resided in the Moundsville, W.Va. area for eleven years prior to moving to Aleppo Twp. in October 1985.He was a member and former deacon at the Long Run Church of God. Mr. Varner was a 1960 graduate of West Greene High School and attended West Virginia Northern Community College in Wheeling, W.Va. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Viet Nam War where he served as a Staff Sergeant with Company A, 94th Engineer Battalion and the 103D Engineer Company and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Viet Nam Service Medal, Viet Nam Campaign Medal, and National Defense Service Medal.Mr. Varner was an employee of the former Marx Toy Plant in Glen Dale, W.Va. and the former Pete Nelson Pipeline Construction company, and was last employed for over thirty years as a pipeman / beltman for Consol Coal Shoemaker Mine in Benwood, W.Va. prior to retiring in 1998. He was a former member of the N.R.A. and the Hundred American Legion and is a member of the West Greene American Legion Post #416 and was a life member of the V.F.W. Post #4793 of Waynesburg. Mr. Varner enjoyed hunting, C.B. radios, fishing, and the time spent with his family and grandchildren teaching them how to fish. On November 21, 1964, he married Alice Faye "Sis" Tedrow Varner who survives. Surviving in addition to his mother and wife are four daughters, Myrtle "Faye" Hartley of Cameron, W.Va., Barbara, wife of Tom Mannion of Wind Ridge, R.D. #1, Tammy and Ronda Varner both at home; two grand daughters, Kaylene Hartley and Courtney Belle Mannion; two great grandsons, Anthony James King and William Charles Hartley; six brothers, Gary and James Tennant both of Daybrook, W.Va., Pete Tennant of Morgantown, W.Va., Richard Norris of Columbus, Oh., Daryl and Rodney Norris, both of Youngstown, Oh.; three sisters, Brenda (Bindy) Cook of Hubbard, Oh., Mary Knisley of Sterling, Va. and Bernice Tennant of Wadestown, W.Va.Deceased in addition to his father are a sister, Marilyn "Sis" Cook, his stepfather, Harry Norris and his stepmother, Rose Higgens Tennant. Graveside military rites will be accorded by the V.F.W. Post 4793, American Legion Post 330 and the D.A.V. Post 123 all of Waynesburg, Pa.
