Carter Phillips, 80, of Nineveh (Morris Twp.), Greene Co., Pa. died at 4:20 p.m. Monday, February 17, 2014 in his home following a brief illness.He was born April 11, 1933 in Washington, Pa., a son of the late Arthur Lindsey and Leanna Carter Phillips and had resided in the Nineveh area (Morris Twp.) for most of his life.Mr. Phillips was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Waynesburg, Pa.He was a 1952 graduate from Trinity High School.Mr. Phillips was a veteran of the Korean War where he served as a Corporal with the U.S Army in Germany and was awarded the OCC Medal Germany, the Good Conduct Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.He was a former employee of the Purina Corp., and was last employed as a salesperson with Agway in Eighty - Four, Pa. for 24 years and has been a self-employed farmer in Morris Twp., all of his adult life, raising beef cattle and growing and harvesting his own hay. Mr. Phillips has served as a volunteer with the Greene County Bible Release program for the last 20 years, also volunteered with the Yoke Prison Ministries for eight years, and ministered to local nursing homes around Greene and Washington County, and was a member of the Gideon's International. He has been serving as the treasurer for the Greene County Men's Ecumenical Communion Breakfast for the past several years.Mr. Phillips enjoyed playing dartball and spending time with his family and grandchildren.In 1957 he married Burnita Irene Estel who died in February of 1970 and on September 9, 1972 he married Kathleen Irene Johnson who survives.Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Shane A., husband of Linette Phillips of Sycamore, Pa., and Shelby, husband of Annette Phillips of Waynesburg, Pa.; two daughters, Misty, wife of Otto R. Hohing of Washington, Pa., and Tonia R, wife of Scott Beaver of McDonald, Pa.; 14 grandchildren, Rachel, Rebecca, Amanda, Brittany, Shanin, Autumn, Summer, Sheldon, Savanah, Catherine, Amber, Jeremiah, Kylie, and Brennan and three great grandchildren, Krysten, Madyson, and Alexis; and two sisters, Nancy Beabout of Waynesburg, Pa. and Mary Louise Barna of Titusville, Fl.Deceased in addition to his parents and first wife is three brothers, Clarence (Mitch), Paul (Rink), and Raymond (Hoke) Phillips; and one sister, Betty Minor.Family suggest memorial contributions be made to the First Church of the Nazarene Building Fund, 115 Deerfield Lane, Waynesburg, Pa., 15370 or the Cornerstone Ministry Center, PO Box 378, Carmichaels, Pa., 15320.
