Carl Bowers, Sr

Carl W. Bowers, Sr., 67, of Claysville, Pa. died unexpectedly at 6:47 p.m. Wednesday, October 8, 2014 in The Washington Hospital, Washington, Pa. He was born June 22, 1947 in Claysville, a son of the late Charles Ellsworth and M. Mauveline Wheeler Bowers and has resided in the Claysville and Washington Areas for most of his life. Mr. Bowers was a member of the Claysville United Methodist Church where he was a tenor in the church choir and participated in many of the church's activities. He was a 1965 graduate of McGuffey High School and a 1969 graduate of California University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. Mr. Bowers was employed by the United States Postal Service as a mail sorter in the General Mail Facility, Pittsburgh, Pa. for 31 years prior to retiring in 2011. He was a member and was serving as commander of the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War, Camp 120. Mr. Bowers was an avid student of genealogy and enjoyed collecting stamps. On May 16, 1970 he married Valerie Lynn Calcek who died on June 27, 2010. Surviving are a son, Matthew Scott, husband of Tara Bowers of Pittsburgh, Pa.; a daughter in law, Sherri L. Bowers of Denbo, Pa.; and a brother Charles M., husband of Dottie Bowers of Washington, Pa. Deceased in addition to his parents and wife are a son, Carl W. Bowers, Jr. and a brother, Kenneth W. Bowers. Friends will be received from 4 to 9p.m., Sunday in the Young Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., Claysville, Pa., where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, October 13, 2014 with Rev. Rico Vespa officiating. Interment will follow in Washington Cemetery.
