Obituary for Carl Barney

Carl B. "Pap" Barney, 94, of West Finley, Pa. died at 3:20 a.m. Tuesday, August 7, 2012 in the Southwest Regional Medical Center, Waynesburg, Pa. after being in failing health for the past several years.He was born December 2, 1917 in Eighty Four, Pa. a son of the late Wesley Robert and Julia Ann Floyd Barney and had resided in the Washington and Eighty Four areas most of his life prior to moving to Richhill Twp., Greene Co. area in 1951.Mr. Barney attended the former Crabapple Community Church and had attended the Ryerson South Wheeling Baptist Church in Wind Ridge, Pa. as long as his health permitted.He attended Trinity High School. Mr. Barney was a veteran of WW 2 where he served in France and Belgium with the U.S. Army as a Tech Sergeant with Co. G., 38th Infantry, 2nd Division and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal. He was a life member of the Purple Heart Chapter 34 in Waynesburg.Mr. Barney was an employee of the former Preston Oil Company, Bob Bryner Oil and Nickel's Bakery, all in Washington and was also a Richhill Twp. road worker, and was last employed as a heavy equipment operator by Columbia Gas of Pa. prior to retiring in 1983. He enjoyed playing guitar, singing, and doing general repair work.On September 9, 1945 he married Lillian Betty Clutter who survives.Also surviving are three sons, Richard, husband of Linda Barney of West Finley, Roland husband of Coleen Barney of Waynesburg, and C. Bruce, husband of Lisa Barney of Warrenton, Va.; three daughters, Carol Ann, wife of Charles Andrew of Nineveh, Sharon, wife of Roger Creech of Nineveh, and Sandy, wife of Ernie Bedillion of East Finley Twp.; two sisters, Jeannie Coffee of Washington and Emma Christine Barney of Washington; thirteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.Deceased in addition to his parents are three brothers, Paul, Merle and Russel Barney and two sisters, Elsie Leeper and Thelma Bebout.Military rites will be accorded at the church by representatives of the U.S. Army and the American Legion Post 330, V.F.W. Post 4793 and the D.A.V. Post 123 all of Waynesburg. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the 2nd Samuel Nine, Inc., c/o Scott Roberts, 240 W. High St., Waynesburg, Pa. 15370.
